five years to make a black bag

the scamp bag is one of those objects that looks like almost nothing until you know what you’re looking at.

jasper morrison designed it for maharam because he travelled constantly and basically wanted to make the bag he couldn’t find. they started working on it around 2008 and somehow spent five years perfecting what, at first glance, is just a black canvas bag.

that’s what makes it interesting to me. the whole thing is about removing design until only the useful parts are left.

four pockets, nylon handles, heavy zippers, waxed cotton canvas and this weird recessed top that lets you close the bag while still throwing a newspaper or jacket on top. the pockets are even placed asymmetrically so you start remembering where things are without looking.

mine is black, and the waxed canvas changes as you use it. every fold, scratch and worn spot becomes part of the bag. it’s not supposed to stay perfect.

morrison called this kind of thinking super normal. the idea that really good design can be so familiar and obvious that you barely notice the design at all.

which is funny because the scamp took five years to get there. five years to make something that looks like it could have always existed.

that’s probably why i love it. there’s no logo doing the work, no obvious flex, nothing trying to explain itself.

if you know, you know. and if you don’t, it’s just a black bag.

which might be the entire point.
